An alumni association's books are kept by a volunteer accountant who thinks in Tally. They needed software for receipts, payments and member fees that would feel familiar from the first screen - not a new system to learn.
Our first version was a complete accounting system, and the feedback was that it was too much. That was the most useful part of the brief: for someone fluent in Tally, anything that doesn't work the Tally way is friction, however well it is designed.
We rebuilt it around four screens an accountant already knows: Day Book, Ledger, Accounts and Members. Every account has a short code, so the bookkeeper types a code instead of hunting through a list, and a new account can be created in the middle of an entry. Purchase, payment and receipt vouchers post double-entry behind the scenes. Membership numbers continue the association's existing series, and a member's fee posts as a receipt automatically. Entries are never edited in place - corrections are reversal entries, the way an auditor expects. The whole interface is black and white, as the client asked.
